2020-05 Mother’s Day

Only God Himself fully appreciates the influence of a Christian mother in the molding of character in her children. – Billy Graham It has been said that mothers are makers of men for better or worse. Their influence in the lives of children and therefore, the next generation, is immeasurable. One of the highest and most noble pursuits of womanhood is that of becoming a Godly mother. It is a divinely ordained role for which God specifically equipped women.

Mothers are not all stamped from the same template, however. Not only do they have many different characteristics, abilities, and personalities; they also differ in the paths taken in becoming mothers. There are biological mothers, step-mothers, foster mothers, adoptive mothers, mothers of friends, grandmothers, God-mothers, and mothers-in-law, aunts, cousins, and sisters. Even teachers, coaches, and other mentors, provide mothering and guidance to children they come to love.

The poem below from an unknown author asks God’s blessings on a few of the kinds of women who experience motherhood through different paths.

God bless the mothers who carried us in their wombs and their hearts.

God bless and remember the dads who worked as a mother would; to give his children the extra love that only another parent could.

God bless the mothers who took in someone else’s child, loved them as their own, and gave them a loving home.

God bless the mothers who loved their step-children with all their hearts.

God bless the new expecting mothers who are soon to experience the joy of motherhood.

And finally, God bless the mothers who never experienced the joy of parenthood but have been loving mother figures for someone who needed them and was blessed to have them.

These are only a few examples of motherhood that should be celebrated for their selfless devotion. We are grateful for their affection, nurturing, and wisdom and so thankful for their encouragement and lifting our spirits during our disappointments and hard times.

Thank God for these amazing women who continue to love unconditionally and endure even if we reject them or make disappointing decisions. We celebrate and honor our mothers who on one hand can so gently touch and nurture us and yet love so fiercely that they would die for us.

We remember fondly our mothers and mother figures who have left earth’s boundaries. Their memories live forever in our hearts and continue to nourish us. For those who are feeling fresh grief, remember that our heavenly Father loves you and understands. Isaiah 66:13 says, As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.

Lastly, for those of you who are mothers and who provide mothering in any capacity, we give you honor and thanks for the special role that you play in the lives of children. We pray that your Mother’s Day was special.
