2020-10 Leave It There

Why try to carry the world on your shoulders when God already has it in His hands?

God is greater than any burden that you are carrying. The Bible tells us to “Cast your burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.” [Psalm 55: 22]

The old Christian hymn, Leave It There was composed in 1916 by a Methodist minister, Charles A. Tindley. Its refrain is the premise of this month’s inspiration.

Leave it there, oh leave it there
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there
If you trust Him through your doubt, He will surely bring you out
Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there

To cast your burden can be compared to casting your net or your line in fishing – you toss it out to the waters and wait for the results. Similarly, casting your burdens upon the Lord can be thought of as throwing them out to Him or rolling them over on Him. It should be good news that this option is available to those in Christ and that the Lord desires to take care of our burdens. Afterall, burdens are – well – burdensome! They are heavy and wear us down while robbing us of our joy. Burdens cover a multitude of categories including finances, health, and relationships, to name a few. Whatever the burden, the Lord cares. 1 Peter 5:7 tells us, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

Often, however, after we give our cares to God, we repeatedly take them back, that is, we do not leave them there. Or, we interrupt Him and try to help as if the living God needs it. Both of these actions can hold up His solution. This could be a matter of not really trusting His word and believing that our heavenly Father is in control and has the perfect plan for us at the right time of His choosing. The song says, “IF you trust Him through your doubt, He will surely bring you out.” We are encouraged to trust Him even when it does not look hopeful according to our human understanding. So, take your burden to the Lord because He loves you unconditionally, He cares, and He wants to bring you through your situation, but when you do, LEAVE IT THERE.
