2021-05 Celebrating Mothers and the Military

The month of May is commonly recognized for celebrating those who are most cherished among us – mothers; however, in 1999, Congress officially designated the entire month of May as Military Appreciation Month culminating with Memorial Day – the holiday often noted as the unofficial start to the summer season. We pause to express honor and gratitude to these special women, our mothers and mother figures, who love and nurture us not only on Mother’s Day, but of course every day.

As well, we honor the past and present members of our military and their families: military mothers, military spouses, and gold star mothers. All these mothers deserve to be acknowledged and remembered. Whether civilian mothers or service members, they are on call for us 365 days a year – 7 days a week – 24 hours a day. All defend and sacrifice for us.

However, as good to us, as our earthly mothers and service members should be to their children and to citizens, they can and do fall short, but there is one whose love and devotion has no imperfections, and that is our Lord. Just as He is mighty and all-powerful, He is also tender and nurturing. Reflect on these comforting verses.

Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.
Isaiah 25:8 The Sovereign LORD will wipe away all tears.
Isaiah 40:11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in His arms, holding them close to His heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.
Philippians 4:19 This same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

Take comfort in knowing that His love, His nurturing is consistent, perfect, and everlasting. He is always there for you to pour out His love upon you.
