[Psalm 95:1] O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
[Psalm 98:4] Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.
[1 Chronicles 16:9] Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works.
In 1991, Eric Clapton wrote “Tears in Heaven” after a horrific accident when his four-year-old son, Conor, fell to his death from a window in a New York City apartment. It is one of the most gut-wrenching songs about a child in the history of music. Despite the heartbreaking reason for the song, it helped Clapton win six Grammys in 1996.
At the other end of the spectrum, in 1976, Stevie Wonder released the delightful song, “Isn’t She Lovely.” Wonder penned the precious hit to express his joy for the birth of his first child, daughter Aisha. Aisha Morris is now a lovely woman who is a singer herself. Wonder performed the song live for Queen Elizabeth II at her Diamond Jubilee Concert in June 2012, with modified lyrics to refer to the Queen.
Has anyone composed a song exclusively for you? Whether you know it or not, the answer is YES! And the artist is incomparable – it is our almighty God, our creator, the maker of heaven and earth.
His word declares that He actually sings over us. What a marvelous thought. Zephaniah 3:17 tells us, “The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, HE WILL REJOICE OVER YOU WITH SINGING.” Just as some earthly parents created special songs for their children, the Lord, our heavenly Father sings special songs over us, His children.
The phrase, “will rejoice over you with singing” can be translated: God rejoices over you with such gladness that He exults over you with loud singing. The word exult means to feel or show such great happiness that you are jubilant and ecstatic as in jumping for joy.
The Hebrew word for “singing” means “a ringing cry” with a sense of joy. The Bible tells us that He gave all of His creatures the ability to sing. Job says the angels, who are also called “stars” in Job, can sing. Job 38:6-7 says, “To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?”
God loves for us to sing to Him also. Over and over throughout the Bible, singing is commanded. We are told to sing a new song, to come into His presence with signing, to sing praises, to sing joyfully, and so on. Moreover, singing to the Lord is not based on talent so it is not important to Him that you sing like the powerful gospel diva, CeCe Winans or the great opera tenor, Luciana Pavarotti, rather it is important that you sing praises to our Heavenly Father from your heart.
Going forward, may the words of Colossians 3:16 abide in your hearts: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” SING, SING, SING And periodically, close your eyes, relax, smile, and imagine our great God singing a love song over you, His special child!
