Some Christians are baffled at this verse that seemingly implies that we are to thank God for everything that happens to us. The question arises: How is this possible? This seems to be an unreasonable order from a loving God; however, if you read the verse more thoughtfully, you will note that it says, “IN everything” NOT “FOR everything.”
That oversight of the distinction between “in” vs “for” can lead us to believe that we are to give thanks “for” any and everything that happens in our lives regardless of how dreadful it is. Our heavenly Father is a compassionate, loving father and does not expect us to be excited about accidents, violence, dreadful diseases, destroyed families, the painful death of loved ones, financial ruin, and the other countless heartbreaking and hurtful things that can happen in our earthly lives.
Instead, the Lord wants us to remain thankful despite the hurts and disappointments. Regardless of how awful or challenging the situation is, Paul is encouraging us to always give God thanks for who He is, what He does for us, how He loves us, and for the ultimate gift of eternal life that He has offered us in Jesus Christ. It is in that life that He promises a permanent, unending turnabout from the cruelty of this world. His word declares in Revelation 21:4 that the day is coming when He “shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
In this month of November, we celebrate a special day of gratitude on the Thanksgiving holiday. We do thank our heavenly Father for the multitude of good things that He has given us from the small things to the great things: whether it is health, furniture, provision, loved ones who are still with us and the time that we had with those who have passed on. The lists for all of us should take volumes.
We are also thankful for our veterans as we celebrate Veterans Day, a special day of deserved honor and appreciation for their service and sacrifice. Most of all, we are thankful for Jesus. And just as we are thankful FOR the innumerable good events in our lives, let us also be mindful of being thankful IN and through undesirable circumstances. Keep your eyes steadfast on the Lord during difficulty and remember His promise in Hebrews 13:5 to never leave us or forsake us.
