Obituary For Mr. Gerald Wayne Hopkins Sr.

Mr. Gerald Wayne Hopkins, Sr., 62, of Fayetteville, WV, passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV after a brief illness.

Born, November 24, 1960 in Fayetteville, he was the son Betty Jane Turner Hopkins of Fayetteville and the late Carl Hopkins, Sr.

Gerald graduated from Fayetteville Hight School, Fork Union Military Academy and attended Marshall University, where he played football. Gerald’s prior employment included, car salesman for over 20 years and 30 years, until his passing, as a certified mine health and safety instructor for the state of WV. He enjoyed, most of all, family and friends. Gerald has a love for cooking and sports. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church, Fayetteville which merged with Mt. Zion Baptist, Garten, WV.

Gerald, in addition to his father, Carl Hopkins, Sr., was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John and Gladys Turner; paternal grandparents, William and Althera Hopkins and brothers, Carl Hopkins, Jr. and Garrick Lloyd Hopkins, and his former wife, Shawn Ann Hopkins.

He is survived by his mother, Betty Jane Hopkins; sons, Gerald W. Hopkins, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Travis (Katie) Hopkins, and Troy (Haley) Hopkins, both of Fayetteville, WV and Justin Jackson of Beckley, WV; grandchildren, Braley, Paxton, Claire, Tate, Tristan, Lennix, Summer, Shirley, Issac, Douglas and Bella; sisters, Linda Sue Hopkins of Fayetteville and Renee (Hopkins) Lewis of Morgantown, WV; eight nephews, three nieces, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins & friends.

Funeral service will be 12:00PM Monday, December 4, 2023 at Bradley Freewill Baptist Church 6132 Robert C. Byrd Dr. Mt. Hope, WV. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends, while wearing mask and observing social distancing, may view and visit with the family one hour prior.

    We played football and basketball together and graduated from the class of '79. I can't believe he's gone. Rest in peace, my brother, and my deepest sympathies to the Hopkins family.

    I played football, and basketball and ran track with Gerald but one more thing when he told me that he played golf. I got so excited and had to have some rounds of golf with him. All the memories we made won't be forgotten.
