Obituary For Mr. Leigh Withers Staunton

Mr. Leigh Withers Staunton, 55 of Charleston, WV, died on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at Thomas Memorial Hospital in So. Charleston, WV. At his request, no funeral service will be held yet a memorial service will take place instead.

Leigh was born April 12, 1968, in Nyack, NY to John Brenton Staunton Jr. of Oak Hill, WV and the late Mrs. Nancy Withers Staunton. At the age of 9, his family moved from NY to WV, where he would go on to graduate from Oak Hill High School, class of 1986.

Leigh could truly accomplish anything he set his mind to do. At a very early age, it was apparent that he was a gifted craftsman as he could build/fix anything, an artist as he could paint and sculpt using various techniques and materials and was a truly creative musician. He’s always had a very gentle and kind spirit, loving animals of “any kind” and being around multi-cultural people. And he was a most loyal son, father, brother, cousin, and friend. “Everybody who met Leigh, fell in love with his infectious belly laughs and contagious sense of humor.” He always carried a smile and would lift up ones spirit. He was the definition of joy!

Leigh,in addition to his mother, was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Hattie Withers Cook and Esther Hall Staunton and grandfathers, James P. Withers and John B. Staunton.

Leigh, in addition to his father, is survived by his brothers, John B. Staunton II of Lewisburg, WV and Martin F. (Melissa) Staunton of Princeton, WV; sister, Rebecca (Neal F. Blaak) Staunton of Wassenaar, The Netherlands; sons, Deon L. Staunton of Gasden, AL and Cameron M. (Stacy) Staunton of Mount Juliet, TN; daughter, Hanna K. Staunton of Charleston, WV; two beloved step-children, Savanna D. and Antoine K. Thomas; ten grandchildren, two nephews; four nieces and a very large family of aunts, uncles, and cousins; and lots and lots of friends as “just about everyone knew Leigh.”

Memorial service will be 1:00PM Saturday, April 29, 2023 at the Holiday Lodge Hotel & Conference Center, 340 Oyler Ave., Oak Hill, WV with Rev. Charles E. Blackmon officiating.
