Obituaries – Their Stories Live On

Mr. Leslie Daniel Young I passed away Sunday, June 16, 2024 at the age of 81.

Les was born April 5, 1943 in Logtown, WV, the son of John and Annie Young and was the fourth oldest of 13 siblings.

Les grew up in Ansted, WV, where he was a lifelong member of Mount Chapel Baptist Church, Ansted, WV. He served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, Chairman of the Trustee Board as well as Superintendent of the Sunday School. Les came to follow Christ at an early age and was a devoted Christian.

Les was a graduate of Ansted High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society. Following high school he enlisted in the US Army and served as an Army Medic for 6 years, 9 months and 24 days. He pursued a nursing degree at Helene Fuld School of Nursing and later worked at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ as a staff Registered Nurse. He was a graduate of the Nurse Anesthesia program at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Les met and married Bertha Proctor, a fellow nurse at Monmouth Medical in 1975. They moved to Beckley, WV and added three children to this union. He later received a Bachelor’s of Nursing degree from West Virginia University. He worked as a Certified Register Nurse Anesthetist at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, WV for 35 years. He was the Chief CRNA there for many years and was a member of the professional organization, American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.

Les, after retirement, moved to Morgantown, WV to be near family.

Les enjoyed Bible study, driving cars and watching football and baseball. He was fan of the original Brooklyn Dodgers. He also loved barber shop talk and liked to joke with everyone he met.

Les is preceded in death by his son, Leslie Daniel Young II.

Les was loving husband and father to his family and will be truly and greatly missed. He leaves to mourn his wife of 48 years, Bertha; two daughters, Kimberly Young and Tanya (JD) Ammons; granddaughters, Camille and Aurora; grandsons Isaiah and Xavier and daughter-in-law, Jessica.

His living siblings include Vernice Calloway of Columbus, OH, Michael Young of Charleston, WV, Melvin (Lorie Young of Clarksville, TN and Glen (Joyce) Young of Raeford, NC. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews and friends.

Funeral service will be 1:00PM Saturday, June 22, 2024 at Mount Chapel Baptist Church, Ansted, WV with Rev. Herman James officiating. Burial will follow immediately after in the church cemetery.

Friends, while wearing masks and observing social distancing, may visit with the family one-hour prior.
