Obituary For Mr. Rudolph “Chuckie” Simon

Mr. Rudolph Nathaniel “Chucky” Simon, age 80, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 5, 2024.

Rudolph was born to the late Austin Simon & Annie Simon Duren in Beckley, WV on November 15, 1943.

Rudolph was educated in the public schools of Raleigh County and attended Stratton High School.

Rudolph following high school, moved to NJ for a short period then returned to WVA to work for the Department of Motor Vehicles for the State of WV. He later worked as a coal miner at the West Moreland Coal Company, East Gulf, WV. He became an active member, representative and spokesperson for the United Mine Workers Association. He finished a term for a State House of Representative in Charleston WV. He finished his career as a Housing Inspector for the City of Beckley.

Rudolph enjoyed fishing, camping, watching westerns and all types of sports. Affectionately known as “The Mayor of East Park”, his front porch was the gathering spot for all the great philosophers and historians of the neighborhood. They spent hours each day reliving stories of their youth and solving world problems. Chucky never met a stranger. If you happened to pass by his home during one of these sessions you would be greeted with “Hey, watcha’ know good?”, and invited to join the conversation. You could be the preacher, Sunday School teacher, Fire Chief or Governor, Chucky had something to say to you.

Chucky was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Joanne Simon and his son William Simon.

Rudolph leaves to cherish his memories his sister, Jeri Lawler; daughters, Anne Simon Benn and Veronica Simon Perry (Hugh); grandchildren, Tasia Simon Wilson (Tralane), LaShima Simon Murdock (Joe), Duane Simon, Thiel Benn (Andrea), Joshua Lafferty, Nicole Simon, Jacob Beavers, Mikayla Simon, Makenzie Simon; niece, Nannette Moore; great-nephew, Christopher Leonard; great-grandchildren, Tylen Sears, Abdul Sears, Zanyah Sears, Joelle Murdock, King Murdock, Jaylen Murdock, Jayda Petty, Brielle Pack, Tamia Joy Benn, and Andrew Benn; special son, Rev. Gregory E. Scott; cousin, William “Punka” Hall; lifelong friends, Dolphus Bradley (Ann), Terry Dooms Cooper and a host of cousins, colleagues and friends.

Funeral service will be 12:00PM Saturday, February 17, 2024 at Heart of God Ministries 1703 S. Kanawha St. Beckley. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

When I first met Mr. Big Chuck Simon he was visiting Tasia and Trey Wilson for Thanksgiving in Winston-Salem, NC. When he came to my home with Trey we had a great time together and he always happy to be with Trey and Tasia. Big Chuck was a man with a good heart and he loved people and gave good advice with humor! I will always remember him for loving my son as his own that gave me joy as a mother that her son was loved and accepted as a member of the Simon Family. Sincerely, Gloria Wilson

The Hines-Morgan family wish to extend our profound sympathy to our Simon family. We all have fun memories of our dearest "chuckie". And he will be missed in the greater Beckley community. Some of us remember the pride that he showed when we called him "Mayor of East Park". We called him so because it was quite normal to see him holding court on his front porch or at his special seat at church. It was there where family and community friend would gather to hear him share East Park history, or just to hear some of his jokes. He loved his community and his family, and he was always there for so many people when they needed a helping hand. He was just that kind of guy. So now, Chuckie is at peace. But he leaves us with precious memories. They shall linger with us and serve as an example of how we should treat each other. We are blessed to have known him.

I meet Chuckie about 7 or 8 years back, maybe more. He was my Aunt's neighbor and friend and when she became ill he "kept a watchful eye" on things at her home which I was very appreciative for. After she passed he became my friend. I would visit her home to watch after things and keep the yard up and would always go to visit Chuckie and have a good ole conversation. He was one of those older men who could tell a tale and lace it with wisdom, advice and humor and I will miss sitting on his porch and talking with him. May he rest in peace and I'm so glad I meet him and grew to know him.
