Obituary For Mr. Thornton Edward Price Jr.
Mr. Thornton Edward Price Jr., 88, of Beckley, passed away Thursday, January 17, 2019 at home.
Born October 16, 1930 in Sabine, WV, (formerly known as Glen Morrison, WV), he was the son of the late Thornton Edward and Elizabeth Ann West Price Sr.
He attended Scott High School in Glen Rogers, WV.
To help make ends meet for the family during his teen years, he worked for many of the leading citizens, such as Dr. Cobb and Mrs. Harlow at the community company store in Glen Morrison. He worked a short time in the coal mine before being drafted into the US Army in 1952 as a member of the Army Corp. of Engineering. He was a Veteran of the Korean War and member of VFW Post 4469.
In 1954, after his military service, he lived at the YMCA while looking for work in Chicago, IL. There his occupations included factory work, electrician’s assistant, and motor repairman assistant. In later years, he landed a job with the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, known as Amtrak, retiring as a Chef. Upon retiring in 1995, he returned to Beckley to live with his mother.
Thornton had a winning personality. He never met a stranger. After retirement, he enjoyed driving all over the country while working for Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
In addition to his parents, Thornton was preceded in death by his brothers, James, Robert and Joel and sister, Odessa Willis.
Those left to cherish precious memories are his daughters, Sheila Ramsey of Far Rockaway, NY and Tantinya Hawkins of Chicago, IL; brothers, George Price of Washington, DC; Johnnie (Gwen) Price of Centreville, VA, Richard Price of Bluefield, WV, Garland Price of Upper Marlboro, MD, Kenneth (Bernetta) Price of Beckley, WV and Jeffery (Lois) Price of Fredrick, MD; sisters, Argylie (Marvin) Wade of Detroit, MI, Rovena (Bobby) Ward of Brockton, MA and Patrelia Lewis of Canton, MI and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorial service will be 1:00PM Friday, March 22, 2019 at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, 130 Academy Dr., Dunbar, WV.
