Obituaries – Their Stories Live On

Annie Louise Mays, 88, entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at Harper Mills Nursing Facility in Beckley, WV, after suffering complications from a stroke in November 2018. ​ Born on August 24, 1931 in Concho, WV, she was the daughter of the late Paul Lawrence Berger and Mary Elizabeth Tucker.

​Annie married the late William Thomas Mays on December 23, 1948 and to this union four children were born. Annie and William Mays relocated to New York City to find work and raise their children. She remained in New York until she retired as a cook in a daycare nursery and moved back to WV in 2004.

​Annie was a loving and generous soul and was fun to be around. She loved sitting on her porch with “Lily” the Cat and tending and planting flowers all over her yard. ​ In addition to her parents, Annie was preceded in death by her husband of forty years, William Thomas Mays in 1988.

Left to cherish precious memories are four children, Charlene Mays of New Orleans, LA, Karen Mays Daniels of New York City, Shelia Mays of Elizabeth, NJ and Charles William Mays of York, PA; nephew, Robert (Flora) Smith of Mt. Hope, WV, who she always referred to as one of her children; as well as LaTanya and Glen Gore of MD; special cousin, Jerome Pannel (Duck); six grandchildren, Shavaray, Keisha, Emony (Chynna), Raymond, Leonard, and Corey; four great-grandchildren, Raymond III, Cameron, Ramir, Asa and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Private Graveside Service will be 12:00PM Friday, May 8, 2020 at Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.
