Obituary For Mrs. Gladys Mae Brooks Payne

Mrs. Gladys Mae Brooks Payne, 101, of Turkey Knob, WV died Monday, April 26, 2021. Born July 27, 1919 in Mt. Hope, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Virenda Carter Brooks. Mrs. Gladys was a graduate of DuBois High School, homemaker and also the oldest member of United Missionary Baptist Church, Mount Hope. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew Julius Payne; brothers, James, Henry, Frank and William; sisters, Catherine Bradshaw, Gwendolyn Logan, Norma Chalmus and Betty Joiner. Those left to cherish precious memories are her daughter, Rose B. Payne of Mount Hope; brother, Joseph Leroy Brooks of Boston, Massachusetts; sister, Patricia (John) Cobbs; stepchildren, Rev. Matthew Watts, Ollie Watts Davis and Cuther Watts; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be 2:00PM Saturday, May 1, 2021 at United Missionary Baptist Church 205 S. Fayette Ave. Mt Hope with Pastor Walter E. Clay officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends, while wearing gloves and masks and observing social distancing, may view one hour prior to the service.

    I worked at Kroger Beckley Crossing years ago, and loved how she always hugged everyone working there. I remember her daughter's name was Rose.
