Obituary For Mrs. Hazel Reynolds Dooms

Mrs. Hazel Reynolds Dooms, age 103, a resident of East Park in Beckley for 84 years, died at Raleigh General Hospital on July 7, 2021. She was born in Stanley, NC on April 15, 1918, to the late Fred Reynolds and Eva Mackins Reynolds Harvey.

Hazel worked for several prominent families in Beckley before attending nursing school. She was a dedicated LPN and retired from the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital after 16 ½ years of service, working obstetrics and in the newborn nursery, a job she loved. Even after retiring, she continued with private duty nursing.

A strong, hard-working, prayer warrior, Mrs. Dooms was a member of Welcome Baptist Church for more than 60 years. She participated in numerous activities, including member and Financial Secretary of the Senior Choir, Program Chairperson of the Elizabeth Mission Society, and had the honor of serving as Head Church Mother.

A member of many clubs and organizations, she served as Associate Conductress of Melvola Chapter #1 Order of Eastern Star, Senior Matron of the Heroines of Jericho, and Worthy Counsellor of the Court of Clanthe.

Preceding her in death was her husband, James Edward Dooms; sister, Christine Berger; brother, Nathaniel Reynolds; and beloved grandson, James Albert Melvin.

She leaves to cherish years of happy memories, three beloved daughters – Marilyn Melvin Scott, Shirley I. Dooms, and Terry V. Cooper; three grandchildren – Denise Melvin, Bonita Dooms, and Kevin Melvin; 10 great-grandchildren – Chimere and Terrell Melvin, John Wetzel, and Kevin Jr., Kyra, DeMisha, DeMetria, Laura, Jamie, and James Melvin; six great great-grandchildren – Evalice Longino, and Dai’Lynne, Aliyah, Alexa, Sir’Mar and Emyiah Melvin; eight nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Diane Berger; one cousin Nevader Strong; one godson Stevie Kidd; and adopted son and daughter-in-law – Melvin and Naomi Hines; many dear friends, including Doris Morgan and Pheobe Davis and a community of all ages who she loved. Visitation at 12 pm, followed by funeral services at 1 pm on Wednesday, July 14 at Welcome Baptist Church, 206 8th Street, Beckley, Reverend David Allen, Pastor.

Masks are required.
