Obituary For Mrs. Helen Martin Wynes

Ms. Helen Martin Wynes, 102, of Beckley passed away peacefully Monday at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital. She was surrounded by many family and friends who loved and cherished her.

Helen was born November 14, 1923 to the late James Webb and Elizabeth “Mama Webb” Fralin.

Helen graduated from Stratton High School in 1941, then attended West Virginia State University. Up until her passing, she was the oldest living graduate of Stratton High School.

Helen, while living in Canton, OH, worked retail jobs as a clerk. She volunteered in Canton City public school system by reading to the kids and serving as a mentor to many. She was an avid bowler and bowled in many leagues.

Helen, while in Canton, was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church, where he served as Head of Deaconess Board. Upon moving back to Beckley, she returned to New Hope Baptist Church where she attended faithfully until her health started to fail her. She will always be a loyal member of New Hope.

Helen was preceded in death by her father, James Webb; mother, Elizabeth Webb; brother, James Webb; sisters, Lucille Brooks, Bernice Webb, and Lillian Palmer, and daughter, Deloris Martin Kidd.

Helen leaves to cherish her memories to her daughter, Wanda Martin of Columbus, OH; son, Walter Wynes of Canton, OH; grandsons, Steve of Beckley, WV, Charles “Butch” of Columbus, OH, David (Tiffany) of Lawrenceville, GA, Kevin of Columbus, OH; step-daughter, Gonzela “Weasel” Wynes of Canton, OH; 13 great-grandchildren; special friends and family, Vicki Webb, Micki James, Veronica and all those that lived at Crestview Dr. Apartments, whom she considered her extended family.

Funeral service will be 12:00PM Thursday, February 26, 2026 at New Hope Baptist Church 304 Worley Rd. Beckley. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends, while wearing masks and observing social distancing, may view and visit with the family one-hour prior.

    My wife and I are tenants at Crestview. I remember my first contact with Ms Helen. It was heartwarming. Ms Helen smile lit up the room. When we visited you at RGH that smile was again welcoming and genuine. Condolences to your family.
