Obituary For Mrs. Joyce A. Russell Floyd

Mrs. Joyce A. Russell Floyd, 77, of Montgomery, WV, was called from Labor to Reward on Monday, February 18, 2019 at her home.

Born July 16, 1941 in Eckman, WV, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Beulah Russell.

She was a graduate of Bluefield State College, Bluefield, WV, where she joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. After graduating from college, she was a Social Worker in Mercer County. Later, she became a teacher, having taught in McDowell and Kanawha counties, After 45 years, as an Educator and Principal, she retired from Fayette County. Truly a woman of God who worked tirelessly in her Ministry, she was very active in the Mount Olivet Missionary Baptist Association. On the District Level, she served as President of Mount Olivet No. 3 Congress of Christian Education, Past President of Mount Olivet Deacons’ Wives, auditor for The Women’s Convention and served on the Executive Board. On the state level, she served as First Vice-President of WV Baptist State Convention Women’s Convention, Past Second Vice-President of the WVBSC Women’s Convention, Financial Secretary for WVBSC of Congress Christian Education, President of the Sunday School Congress, WVBSC Seminary Extension Classes, top contributor to the Martha Spencer Foreign Mission Drive and took classes at Abram Price Youth Encampment, where she was Counselor of the year. On the National Level, she attended The National Baptist USA, Inc., attended conventions and convention board meetings and Congress of Christian Education, where she took classes.

She was a member of St. John Baptist Church, where she was the pianist, President of the Missionary Circle, Trustee, Choir Director, Deaconess, Youth Director and Bible Bowl Coordinator. Mrs. Floyd was a faithful member in the Naomi Chapter No. 10 Order of Eastern Stars. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Lillie Jane Cunningham and brother, William J. Russell.

Left to cherish precious memories are son, William T. (girlfriend, Jennifer D. Lenhart) Floyd II; grandchildren, William T. “Trey” Floyd III, Marquise D. McDonald, Shylynn Alexia Lenhart and Winston Tyler Walcott; ex-husband and caregiver, William T. Floyd; sister, Norma D. Russell of Germantown, MD; sister-in-law, Angelia Russell and brother-in-law, John H. Cunningham.

Special thanks to Sonja and Kim at Hubbard Hospice House for the loving, tender care given during her time of illness.

Homegoing service will be 2:00PM Saturday, February 23, 2019, at St. John Baptist Church, Morris Drive, Montgomery, with Rev. Douglas Mullins officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

    I remember her giving me 25 hits from a paddle for about near nothing.She whipped several children in our class.She pinned a boys head in the doorway.She was the meanest most high tempered person and should have lost her job.I am 65.Was young when she beat me with that wood paddle.
