Obituary For Mrs. Martha Evelyn Henry

Mrs. Martha Evelyn Henry, 91, of Beckley, WV passed Monday, August 26, 2024.

Born February 17, 1933 in Lafayette, AL, she was the daughter of the late Wesley Hughley and Jesse Mae Pressley.

She was a member New Hope Baptist Church, Beckley, Eastern Star, New Hope Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher, New Hope Member of Choir #1 & Choir #2 (shape note choir), Choir Director of Shape Note Choir, New Hope Deaconess Board, Sunbeam Mission, New Era Convention Choir, Red Brush Community Development, WV Voters Hall of Fame, Former Candy Striper at Raleigh General Hospital and she actively participated in multiple auxiliaries at the West Virginia Baptist State Convention, Hilltop Baptist Center..

In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Henry; brothers, James Hughley and William Hughley; sister, Betty Bethel and twin sister, Mary Hughley.

Left to cherish precious memories are her children, Lawrence Henry of Beckley, WV, Alesia Johnson-Scott (Terry) of Stone Mountain, GA and Denisha Henry of Bowie, MD; sister, Florence Powers of Hyattsville, MD; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be 12:00PM Saturday, August 31, 2024 at Heart of God Ministries 1703 S. Kanawha St. Beckley with Bishop Fred T. Simms and Pastor Walter M. Leach officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends, while wearing masks and observing social distancing, may visit with the family one-hour prior.

I want to offer my condolences to the family of Mrs Martha Henry. My earliest memories of her were the days when she, her husband (Samuel) and the other Henry family members sung together in the Linwood Baptist Church choir in Slab Fork,WV. I remember at the time there were two sons (Samuel "Scrapper" and Lawrence). Mrs Martha was like my second mom, I would play for hours with Scrapper and his train set. Over the years I've lost loved ones and during the wake I would turn around and there was Mrs Martha and Mr Sam to offer their support.
