Obituary For Mrs. Mattie Antoinette Austin

God took Mattie Antoinette Austin, 59 of Saint Albans, WV on Sunday, October 17, 2021. She was born on July 2, 1962, and adopted/raised by Olice and Genel Byers of Dunbar, WV. Mattie graduated from Dunbar High School in 1980 and then attended Garnet Career Center, where she received her certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Mattie demonstrated extraordinary love and care for her patients during her 20 years of employment at Thomas Memorial Hospital. Additionally, Mattie served as First Lady of the Church of God Militant Pillar and Ground of Truth Ministries in Charleston for over 29 years, selflessly serving alongside her husband, Bishop Michael Austin. Mattie was united in holy matrimony with her beloved Bishop Michael Austin on February 14, 1982. Their union was blessed with five children: Michael II, Stephen, Genel, Matthew, and Jonathan; four daughters-in-love: Nakia, Jessica, Charla, and Tawonna; grandchildren: Samuel, Michael III, Carter, Alexandria, Jasmine, Triniti, Jada, and Jael; and a host of nephews, nieces, and godchildren. Mattie was preceded in death by her beloved adopted parents, Mr. Olice Byers and Mrs. Genel Byers of Dunbar, WV. In addition to her husband and children, Mattie is also survived by her best friends of over 40 years, Crystal Darnell of Columbus, OH, Shirley Wooding of Charleston, WV, and Paula Neal of Virginia. First Lady Mattie Austin was a jewel; a devoted wife, a selfless mother, a protective grandmother, a thoughtful sister, saint, and friend. Although a quiet soul, she was a mighty warrior, led by the spirit of God! She truly embodied the spirit of the Proverbs 31 woman, opening her mouth with wisdom and kindness on every occasion. Mattie had a rare gift of being able to create stillness in the midst of chaos, hearing the words spoken by a person's heart that were never uttered aloud. Her infectious smile, affirming spirit, and gentle presence will be missed by all who knew her. We take comfort in knowing the impact she had on every person she met will always remain. Her legacy of grace, perseverance, and humility will transcend generations to come through her children, grandchildren, and church family. Mattie has finished her course, refined by fire, and emerged pure as gold. She lived her life before her family and the world to ensure she would hear, "Well done!" As a faithful servant, she has put on her heavenly garment and entered eternal rest. A celebration of life will be held at 12:00PM Saturday, October 23, 2021 at First Baptist Church of Charleston with Bishop Jessie Berry officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston, WV. A special viewing for friends and family, who are requested to wear masks and observe social distancing, will be held one-hour prior to the celebration of life service (11:00AM) at the church.

To Bishop Austin & All family members: Our hearts are greatly saddened by the passing of such a beautiful Woman of God. As a fellow adoptee, I was able to share personal thoughts on occasion with First Lady Austin. Her insight and positive outlook were a wonderful blessing to me. She epitomized a Proverbs 31 woman, and I consider it a privilege to have known her. Take comfort family that she's in the hands of a loving Savior. Our sincere prayers are with you and the MPGT church family. God cares and He WILL take care of you. Love, Evangelist Eva Gooch, Danville KY.
