Obituary For Mrs. Mildred Cross

Mrs. Mildred Cross, 105, of Dunbar, WV and formerly of Alpoca, WV, passed away peacefully to her heavenly home on Saturday, December 20, 2025.

Mrs. Mildred “Mrs. Millie” was born September 29, 1920, in Birmingham, Alabama. She was the oldest daughter of Howard and Mary (Williams) Cleveland. She spent the first ten years of her life in Eskdale, West Virginia with her Aunt Maggie and Robert Williams. She later returned to the Birmingham area of Hooper City, Alabama to care for her mother and father until their death. Years later while visiting a friend in West Virginia she met her husband, David Cross. Their marriage lasted for 43 years until he made his heavenly departure.

Mildred was a devoted wife and mother. Her love and compassion for others was genuinely extended beyond her family. She was the “Rock” of the Cross family and a strong woman of faith in God. Her wisdom and guidance was extraordinary. We are extremely grateful to God for choosing her as our mother.

Mildred, in addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Cross: Grandson, Slyvester Cross: Sisters, Cora, Dorothy Wynn and Laila Mae Williams: Brother, Lewis Cleveland.

Mildred leaves to cherish her life, sons, Ronald Cross and David Cross (Drucilla); step-son, David “Brother” Cross; daughters, Carolyn Warren (Eric) and Norma Jean Cross; grandchildren, Ebony Tye (David), Adrian Cross, Natasha Cross (Alexander Davis), Michelen Valentine, Ronisha Cross, Charisse Austin, Monica Warren, Tonya Johnson (Willie) and Todd Cros; great-grandchildren, Kierra Igwebuike (Shayn Gonzales), Godwin Igwebuike (Ariana), Ellis Tye, Naomi Austin, Zyke’ Gilmer, Zyon Murray, Zavian Murray, Sophaya Cross, Naya Cross, Amari Cross, David Cross, Adrianna Cross, Carter Powell, Jonah Green, and Lexington Cross; great-great-grandchildren, Kyaire Igwebuike and Kylaya Igwebuike; niece, Louise Lynch; and a host of other relatives and friends.

We would like to thank all that received and cherished the extended love that she extended beyond her family. It is a great blessing to know that our mother was loved by so many.

Funeral service will be 1:00PM Monday, December 29, 2025 at the Ritchie & Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel 748 S. Fayette St. Beckley, WV. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

To the Children, Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, and Great-Great-Grandchildren of our beloved Queen Mother, Mrs. Mildred Cross: It is with a deeply heavy yet grateful heart that I extend my sincerest condolences to each of you on the passing of your extraordinary matriarch. For the past 70 years of my life, she was far more than a neighbor to me—she was a guiding presence, a steady voice of wisdom, and a woman whose love helped shape who I am today. In many ways, she helped raise me, and I will forever be thankful for the care, discipline, laughter, and lessons she so freely gave. To live 105 years is a remarkable blessing, but even more remarkable is how she lived those years. She was truly a queen mother—strong, nurturing, graceful, and steadfast. Through her life, she built not only a family, but a legacy that now lives on through generations upon generations. Each of you carries a part of her spirit, her strength, and her love. Her impact reaches far beyond bloodlines. She touched neighbors, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. The values she stood for—faith, family, resilience, and compassion—will continue to echo through the lives of those she leaves behind. As you grieve, I hope you also find comfort in knowing how deeply she was loved and how profoundly she mattered. Her life was full, her work was meaningful, and her legacy is secure. May you find peace in cherished memories, strength in one another, and comfort in the knowledge that she lived a long, beautiful life, well done. With heartfelt sympathy, love, and deepest respect, Serita Jamison Jakes and Family
