Obituary For Mrs. Pamela Lucretia Hughes Moore
In the early morning hours of February 13, 2022, an angel of the Lord was dispatched to escort our dearly loved Pamela Hughes Moore, to her heavenly home. Her loved ones, including her parents and beloved son, Nathaniel “Nate” Vincent Moore, were eagerly awaiting her arrival.
Born Pamela Lucretia Hughes in Beckley, West Virginia, on April 20, 1949, she was the beloved daughter of the late Albert J. Hughes and Lucinda “Boots” Fountain Hughes.
Pamela, known to all as “Pam”, received her education from the Raleigh County School system. It was at Stratton High School where she would not only excel in all academic areas, but find her soul mate and the love of her life, Thomas “Tommy” Moore Sr. The high school sweethearts were united in holy matrimony August 12, 1970. Over their 51 year union, the couple was blessed with two sons, Thomas “Tommy 2” and Nathaniel “Nate”.
Pam began her Christian journey becoming a member of New Hope Baptist Church as a young girl. Ultimately, she would join her husband in his various pastoral positions, faithfully serving as part of the congregation of First Baptist Church Harper Heights. She was also a member of the West Virginia Baptist State Convention.
Pam was a graduate of West Virginia State College, Institute, West Virginia, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1970. While attending West Virginia State College, Pam became a member of the Alpha Delta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Having “10” other Sisters from “The Late Eleven” was right up Pam’s alley. She subsequently obtained a Master of Arts in Education Administration from the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies, along with post graduate studies from Marshall University.
As an educator, Pam found her niche when she became a math teacher at Park Middle School. Pam spent 42 years teaching mathematics in the same classroom, making it her home away from home until her retirement in 2012. Pam served in numerous leadership capacities including the Head of the Mathematics Department, President of the Faculty Senate, Girl’s Track coach, and was nominated several times as Raleigh County Teacher of the Year. Additionally, she was selected and served on the West Virginia Commission for Professional Teaching Standards in Charleston, West Virginia. Pam was also instrumental in developing a Black History Bee which included participation from the community.
Her former coworkers have described her as “everyone’s go-to person”, “Mother and friend” and “Head of the Park Middle School Family”. If a coworker or a student needed anything, all they needed to do was to go to Mrs. Moore, whether it was school supplies, a snack or an entire lunch, a shoulder for support, sound advice, and definitely a diet Pepsi.
Pam’s generosity, compassion, and selfless qualities were obvious to all who knew and loved her. She had a passion for people. During her life, she demonstrated daily her belief that it was more blessed to give than to receive. She would do without in order for others to have what they needed. Of her many achievements, nothing made Pam prouder or more fulfilled than her family. Family was her love. She was happy, satisfied, and blessed beyond measure, loving in a way that was unique unto her. Pam was known for never missing a Marshall University football game in the four years that Tommy 2 was playing, or spending each week in Georgia with grandsons, Trey and Trevor.
A Delta for over 50 years, she was a member of the Beckley Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Pam was also a tireless and dedicated member and treasurer of BEAUTY! (Black Educators Are United Totally Yes!). Her dedication and loyalty to these two organizations further exemplifies her love and commitment to these civic extensions of her family.
The sudden loss of Pam has caused unspeakable grief by all who knew and loved her. It has been a time of reflection for many. There are so many stories we would love to share, but the space will not allow. In remembering her, remember her radiant smile and laughter, her desire to give and bless others, and the many lives she touched in her daily walk, including the lives of the hundreds she impacted with those “42” years spent in the classroom teaching “just a bit more than math”.
Those left to cherish the memories include her beloved husband, Reverend Thomas V. “Tommy” Moore; son, Thomas V. “Tommy 2” Moore II (Frances) of Atlanta, Georgia; grandsons, Thomas V. “Trey” Moore III and Trevor V. “Cheddar” Moore, both of Atlanta, Georgia; brothers, Albert “Chubby” Hughes of Beckley, West Virginia, Dr. Timothy “T.K.” Hughes of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Robert S. Moore Jr. (Barbara) of Beckley, West Virginia; sisters, Lucille “Cookie” Moore Jones (Darrell) of Beckley, West Virginia, Priscilla “Ann” Moore Bradley (Dolphous) of Beckley, West Virginia, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will cherish her memory. You know who you are.
Funeral service will be 12:00PM Friday, February 25, 2022 at St. Paul Baptist Temple 129 Rice St. Beckley with Rev. Thomas V. Moore Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends, while wearing masks and observing social distancing, may view and visit with the family one hour prior to the funeral service.
