Obituaries – Their Stories Live On

Mrs. Violet Virginia Norman Hickman, 86, of Beckley, died Thursday, February 9, 2017.

Born March 7, 1930 in Mt. Airy, NC, she was the daughter of the late Jessie and Annie Mae Rawley Norman.

Violet married Joe Holly Hickman on October 28, 1946.

Mrs. Hickman was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, serving as an usher for over 50 years, then uniting with Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by daughter, Jessie Kay Hickman Guerrant; sons, Roger, Robert, Gunnell, Samuel, Jack, and Don Hickman; grandsons, Dewayne Hickman and Martin Guerrant; brothers, Jessie, Joe and Leroy and sisters, Helen, Lena, Mary Ruth, and Catherine.

Those left to cherish precious memories are her children, James (Freda), Betty Ann Maxwell, Margaret (Bobby), Danny, Ronald (Angela), Carolyn Hickman, and Gregory (Renee); sister, Betty Lee; sister-in-law, Dorothy Norman of Maryland; daughters-in-law, Debbie, Sarah Jane, Delia and Doris; 40 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Mt Zion Baptist Church, 142 Mool Avenue, Beckley, with Revs. Jerry Staples and Nelson Staples III officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.
