Obituaries – Their Stories Live On

Ms. Patricia Ann Covington, 77, of Beckley, WV passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at Raleigh General Hospital. Although her long-term illness overcame her, she fought like a soldier at war … she fought a good fight.

Pat was born Oct. 1, 1946, in Selma, AL to the late Jeff Sr. and Dorothy Lee Cunningham. She was the firstborn and oldest of nine siblings and the only one born in AL. Her parents moved and raised her and her siblings in Sprague WV, where she joined the church at an early age and became a member of the First Baptist Church of North Beckley, the family’s home church.

Pat attended and graduated from Stratton High School in 1964, and shortly thereafter, met and married Calvin Covington (ex-husband/deceased), and from their union they had three children whom she loved dearly.

Pat worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in several states including WV, FL, and TX. She took great pride and care tending to her patients and was often the “go-to” person asked to be by the bedside of those getting ready to transition, which she did with no disregard. She later did light housekeeping until she retired.

Pat was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Calvin Covington; parents, Jeff Sr. and Dorothy Cunningham and brother, Charles Cunningham, Sr.

Pat “Ma” will be forever remembered by her children, John C. Covington (Tracey) and Vincent J. Covington, both of WV, Stephanie R. Covington of VA; siblings, Jeff Cunningham, Jr. (Drucilla) of NC, Sheila Johnson (James) of VA, Dwayne Cunningham of SC, Sarah Woodard of VA, Barry Cunningham of NC, Dana Williams (Carlton) of AL, and Lisa Robinson (James) of VA; along with a host of great-grandchildren; grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; friends and loved ones who will cherish her memory.

Funeral service will be 11:00AM Sunday, September 22, 2024 at the Richie & Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel with Pastor John Burnette officiating.

Friends, while wearing masks and observing social distancing, may visit with the family one-hour prior.
