Obituary For Rev. Eugene Nabors Sr.
Rev. Eugene “Gene” Nabors, 72, of Beckley, WV passed Friday, December 8, 2023.
Rev. Nabors was born in Beckley WV to the late Roosevelt and Leila “Burger” Nabors.
Rev. Nabors graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1969 and from Beckley College in 1980.
Rev. Nabors was united in holy matrimony on January 5, 1973 to Katrina “Cook” Nabors. They were blessed with five children.
Rev. Nabors worked at Raleigh General Hospital and Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital before going into the coal mines. He was also an EMT, construction worker and school bus driver for Raleigh Co. schools. In 2021, he retired from Combined Insurance as a Sales Manager after 34 years.
Rev. Nabors was a former member of Welcome Baptist Church in East Park and later joined New Hope Baptist Church, where he became a deacon. On April 16, 2008, he was ordained as Pastor under the Rev. Nathaniel Curry. He became Pastor of First Missionary Baptist of Glen Jean May 22, 2016.
Rev. Nabors was a member of the New River Valley Missionary Baptist Association, WV Baptist State Convention and Congress of Christian Education. He was also a 32nd degree Mason. Eugene was a staple in the community working with the youth as an AAU basketball and pee wee football coach. He was the first president of the newly reformed East Beckley Bulldogs.
Rev. Nabors, in addition to his parents, was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Eugene and Mary Jane Voyd Nabors; maternal grandparents, Charlie and Mary A. Burger; brother, James Nabors Sr.; uncles, Lawrence, Arthur, Alfred, Layton, Lovey, Harry, and James Burger, and aunts, Thelma Burger, Leona Calloway.
Rev. Nabors leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife of 50 years, Katrina; three sons, Andre (Stacy) Nabors, Brian (Traci) Nabors and Eugene “Gene” (Jennifer Hall) Nabors Jr.; two daughters, Latoya (Anthony Scruggs) Nabors and Tina Nabors Bagut; brother, Layton “Ernie” Nabors; two sisters, Margaret Burger and Marlene Nabors; nine grandchildren, Deion, Rachelle, Donte, Morgan, Tavia, Nyasha, Tamon, Malia and Trevon; five great-grandchildren, Kace, Hendrix, Riley, Korbin, Kingston, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends that became family.
He loved to sing, spend time with his family and support church functions he was able to attend.
Funeral service will be 11:00AM Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Heart of God Ministries 1703 S. Kanawha St. Beckley. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum,
Prosperity.
Friends, while wearing masks and observing social distancing, may view and visit with the family one hour prior to the funeral service.
